Gregory Uribe – Editor-in-Chief

This is my final year working for this publication. I’ve been yelled at, physically assaulted and been called a moron far too many times by Mallett and the rest of the staffers. The hours are long and the pay is terrible. I started out 3 years ago clean shaven and wearing contacts. I was a happy lowly staff writer. Then I became Editor-in-Chief. Now I have a full scraggly beard and proudly wear my lazy man spectacles. If we didn’t have a fridge in the office, I’d probably be in Student Council right now.

Will Ritchie – Online Editor

There is no free will. Only Will Ritchie. High school sort of tossed me around a bit, I got a bit lost on what I want to do with my life. But I think i’m back on track now, writing has become a key part of my free time again. Next stop Editor-in-Chief of The World. People I have to step on to reach higher planes of power: Oprah Winfrey, Saddam Hussein, Cole Christensen, and the man who gives me pills.

Aaron Sakowski – Print Editor

Greetings lesser beings. My name is Aaron Sakowski. Soon I and my league of fictional animal characters will overrun your world and establish the state of Sakowskistan. You may ask, “why does he lay his plans out for us like this?” Don’t worry, my victory is inevitable. Anywho, I usually write news, I like writing features, and if I’m feeling especially caustic I’ll write an editorial. I used to be the cartoonist, but unfortunately it didn’t fit within my plans for world domination. Also, people with actual artistic talent may have had something to do with it. According to my minio…I mean, friends, I do not exist. It’s just so they can have deniability. Reliable help is hard to find. I like weird music that you probably haven’t heard of. I like lots of different movies. Usually action movies or dark humor.

All your base are belong to me.

Jasmine McMasters – Visual Editor

(Because Jasmine is unable to describe herself) “Jasmine, at no point in your rambling, incoherent stint in newspaper were you even close to anything that could be considered a photographic success. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having glanced at the creation you’ve spit out. I award you no points.”

Brittney Nichols – Online Photo Director

I don’t know why I say the things I say. I worry about future events. I get sick more than your average person. I clean my best friend’s room when I get bored. I’m a good driver. Even if my car is an old man. I get fascinated with things easily. I rearrange things and get inspired quite often. I take pictures of everything, yet you’ll hardly ever see me with my camera. I’d prefer to spend my day just driving around and listening to music, but work and school stand in my way.  One day, I’m going to do something quite incredible with my life.

Jackie Kuenstler – LBTV Producer

I’m Jackie, and I’m a busy person. I’m in colorguard and newspaper along with being the being the Executive Producer of  LBTV. I need to wear sunscreen every day because I will burn to a crisp without it. I like to take pictures, ride my bike, read, play some sports, eat, drink lemonade, and play with my dog. I’m really excited about  my senior year and my future. It’s my second year on newspaper, and the first year of LBTV, which by the way is going to be awesome.

Alison Peterson – LBTV Personality

I hate writing. It has taken me way too long to write this stupid bio thing. There is a reason why I am in yearbook and not newspaper. Not only am I the LBTV girl but I am the assistant editor of The Arena this year. A few things to know about me: I am a varsity cheerleader. I could eat broccoli for the rest of my life and be perfectly content. I hate the Dallas Cowboys and you’ll probably never hear the end of it. A little note to my journalism family: It’s nice being able to walk into the journalism room and feel the love.

Matt Vela – LBTV Sports

Coming Soon

Taylor Cockrell – LBTV News

I’m Taylor Cockrell and I have a lot of opinions. In my opinion LBTV is the most legit news podcast on the web. In my opinion, the Rider Online should be the Internet home page for all American citizens. In my opinion, LBTV News and Legacy journalism is the most dynamic duo since Shaq and Kobe. In my opinion, you need to get your mind ready because we are about to blow it away. I’m Taylor Cockrell and I know a lot of facts. Fact: I play soccer and football. Fact: I am one of the anchors for LBTV News. Fact: I ride motorcycles and roller coasters. Fact: You can learn more by exploring the Rider Online, so go… NOW! “This has been Taylor Cockrell, reporting for LBTV News.”

Ian Cook – Assistant Online Editor

I’m Ian Cook and I hope to help you create new and better realities for yourself by leading you out of your SP ways. With the help of my news articles and other work for The Rider you can find The Way of Happiness, avoid the evils of clinical psychiatry, and learn to apply your ethics ruthlessly. My authority to enlighten you PTSs comes from having read KSW over five hundred times, having similar thetan levels to L Ron Hubbard himself, and being a reformed psychiatric patient. HeheHAHAHA ahh, oh was I laughing manically again? Sorry, talking about the evils of modern medicine makes me feel giddy, like I’m jumping up and down on national television. I destroy any who stand in my path to ultimate newspaper domination. Please, if you are not going to take the time to discriminate between when I mean exactly what I say and when I am being sarcastic or satiric, just take the safe route and take nothing I say seriously.

Russell Kirby – Assistant Print Editor

Hey guys. I’m Russell Kirby, but you probably already knew that. Whether you could tell by the legendary “Hey guys” phrase I lay claim to or by the picture above is irrelevant. I think we can all agree that this website is pretty awesome. Some might call it groundbreaking, revolutionary, even. At least that’s how I see it.

But since you’re here, there’s one thing I’d like to address. It’s the message I left you all last year. Remember that time I said “It’s time to upgrade from cute to sexy”?

What happened, guys?!

It’s a new year. I’ve changed my ways. What’s going on? Where’s my entourage of women?! Obviously this message did not reach out to enough people last year. So! This year I aim to promote The Rider as best I can and increase site traffic by at least 300%. That’s right. Tell your friends. Tell your family. Have a great day!

Brett Walker – News Editor

Honestly, I’m the most interesting person you’ll ever meet. More interesting than the Dos Equis guy. I can stop a train with my mind. It won’t crash or anything. It will just stop. Right in its tracks, in its train tracks. If I could have anything in the world, I would have the world. My Charizard is level 101. I didn’t use any Rare Candies. He breathes green flames because he eats pennies. I breathe clear because I don’t breathe flames. I don’t eat pennies either. I wrote this tomorrow, after saving some dolphins stuck in an iceberg.

Will Davis – Sports Editor

I’m Will Davis.  I am probably the most sporty guy in the journalism class.  Outside of newspaper I have a job which I detest.  I box as well, so don’t mess with me or I’ll drop you like Mike Tyson.  I also am very religious and go to church every time I can.  I’m the biggest Dallas Cowboys fan alive and they’re probably the only thing that can get me to cuss unintentionally.  On the staff I handle all the sports stuff, which is awesome for me because sports are the only thing that makes me happy.  I plan on having a fun and great year on staff and bring you the most in depth sports stories as possible.

Nick Jimenez – Entertainment Editor

I’ve been with The Rider since Issue One and have done very little since then. I’ve gained a small level of notoriety in the school with my personal column where I write about twitter, the Jonas Brothers and my lack of good looks. You know, real, hard hitting news. Oh well, at least I have fun.

Michelle Heath – Feature Editor

‘Names Heath. Michelle Heath. This is my third year at Legacy; my third year as the features editor of the Rider. Every time I go to a public place I am totally befuddled when the toilets don’t flush on their own. I have to say the best investment this school has made is the automatic flushing system. It’s convenient. It’s sanitary. Plus it prevents me from having to kick the toilet seat handle whenever I have to flush. I like to keep my hands clean. So pretty much I’m just an interesting girl looking for an interesting guy. Preferably one who looks like a mix between Emile Hirsh and James Franco. If you fit this description, come see me.

Ashley Canterbury – Personalities Director

This is me, Ashley Canterbury. I’m a tree hugger animal lover. Peace and love is my motto. This is my second year on the newspaper staff and now I’m personality editor. Yay! “You’re a good writer when you actually want to write,” -Mr. Mallett. I love to dance, that’s my other passion. I dye my hair constantly, if you see it red one day you can pretty much guarantee it will be a different color the next month. If you catch me in the mornings or afternoons you will probably see a cup of coffee in my hand, it helps me get through the days. What other people might find strange I find perfectly normal. I’m different and that explains everything.

Allyson Sekerke – Staff Writer

I have the right to remain silent; anything I say can and will be used against me in a court of law.

Ashley Deam – Staff Writer

I like pretty pictures.  I guess that’s why I’m a photographer.  I’m not a big fan of my name.  I’d rather have Julianna Di Napoli’s.  Sometimes I’m shy, usually I’m not.  Long rainy days are my favorite.  I’m super excited I can drive now, but I can’t park.    Making videos with Taylor Nix is one of my many hobbies.  I’m not really sure how to describe myself. So I won’t.

Olivia Hebert – Staff Writer

I’m Olivia Hebert (pronounced “a bear”). I came into newspaper under the impression that I would be a photographer. Well, my fate somehow changed, and I am now a staff writer. When I first heard of Legacy’s newspaper class, I can’t deny my envy. Jasmine McMasters somehow scored a class with many of my friends, and I definitely wouldn’t mind being in her shoes. Now I’m happy to say my dream came true, and I thoroughly enjoy being inducted into the newspaper family through Wendy’s Wednesdays. There are many things that bring a smile to my face. Among them are precious owls, chubby things, and cakes. You’re probably confused at my size. Obesity should be a problem for a girl who has an obscene obsession with baking. If you have a birthday, which you should, and I like you, again this is very likely, then I will make you a cake.

Alex Gustafson – Staff Writer

I’m Alex and I am a SENIOR. I was put on staff last year to be the sports editor. However, that didn’t turn out right. I chose to be on staff this year to be a writer and learn ways to enhance my writing skills. Even though I’m not the sports editor, I enjoy reading about and watching sports still. My favorite teams are Texas Tech (guns up Chase!), USC, the Minnesota Vikings, and the Minnesota Twins. I am also into movies. I enjoy Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, and Clint Eastwood. I like the Batman franchise, The Man with No Name franchise, Death Proof, Pulp Fiction, and the El Mariachi franchise. I want to go to college and be a broadcast journalist. In my spare time, I participate in church youth group and until recently I was a Boy Scout. However, now I reached the rank of Eagle and am finally finished, it’s truly an accomplishment.

Marquis Martin – Staff Writer

I’m Marquis Martin new to the family and trying to find my place so far coming from a place where all we have is Wal-mart, and a blonde chick by the name of Carrie Underwood. Yep that’s right the one and only Checotah Oklahoma. Full of natives, casinos, and a celebrity. Coming to Legacy I like to think about it as an opportunity, or a privilege. Writing has always been a thing for me especially one topic or an idea that gave me a million more for my mind an hands to go crazy over, I like to think about writing as a gift to the mind its an easy way to express your personal thoughts an feelings. Being new on the team I hope to learn as well as gain some of the knowledge that they have about working a getting around certain obstacles.

Clarke Rahrig – Staff Writer

Hello world that I don’t seem to fit in, I’m Clarke Rahrig. Most people probably know me as the giant that wanders the halls. Usually the first thing people say to me is “how tall are you?” or “do you play basketball?” Here are my answers once and for all 6’ 6” and no, as hard as it is to believe I do not. I’m on the staff this year and I’m looking forward to it. Hopefully I’ll be able to write stories of a higher caliber, rather a taller one.

Chase Tremaine – Staff Writer

Most people don’t know this, but in a past life, I created newspapers. Throughout the centuries, however, I have moved on to writing poems (Beowulf), stories (The Chronicles of Narnia), and bad television shows (Secret Life of the American Teenager), and I now write songs for a band called Nelson and the Alexanders.  Now that newspapers are online, (and in no better form than The Rider!), I have decided to return to journalism.  If I weren’t a senior, I would totally upstage Greg as Editor-in-Chief.  Instead, I will just have to submit to his power and write some awesome articles.  On a more serious note, I also hope to submit my filmmaking and musical talents to The Rider in order to help Legacy’s Journalism Department create the best and most engaging newspaper in Texas.  Even better than the New York Times.

Ian Henderson- LBTV

My name is Ian Henderson. I’m probably the one guy in Newspaper where you have to wonder why I’m here, not to say that I stick out. To be honest, I’m still pondering on why and how I got into Newspaper; but I am here none the less and I intend to have an interesting time. I am more involved with Broadcast Journalism than Newspaper mostly just because I like being behind a camera more than in front of an article, but then again, that’s just me. Outside of school, I am devoted to perfecting my guitar playing and knowledge of music in general. I am also looking to start a band, so if you think you’re good enough…

Arial Robertson – Staff Writer

I am one of the many staff writers. I can be very shy and keep to myself if you don’t know me. However once the warming up comes, I am super loud and crazy. I can easily go back and forth from lazy to energetic. In my free time I listen to music of pretty much any kind. I love to hang with my friends and take crazy pictures together. Laughter and amusement fills my world. The smallest thing can make my day. I love to go camping, but I can’t stand spiders or creepy crawling things. I love to hang with my friends and take crazy pictures together. People call me Mermaid.

Nick Failor – Staff Writer

Given the unfortunate events of my last name, this is my first year and I already have a nickname, “Failure”, GREG!

Writing has been a passion of mine ever since I have been able to read and write. When I came to high school, I found out about journalism and thought it would be insanely fun. Newspaper hasn’t disappointed me one bit. I am glad to be in the staff and plan to give the best I can to all my stories.

Rosanne Trinh – Staff Writer

I’m Rosanne Trinh better known as the only asian in the staff. Unlike Blinky I am no longer terrified of Greg Uribe. This is my second year in newspaper so I am not much of a “newb” as I was last year. My goal is to never eat sushi a day in my life. I am not planning to eat it anytime soon; I think it is just disgusting! My cousin was the one that made me take this class. I’m glad I listened to him or it would be a big regret if I didn’t choose this wonderful class. I used to hate writing but now it’s the complete opposite, so that’s why I am a staff writer. Everyday at school I can’t wait till it comes to last block, that’s when my press pass becomes in handy. Newspaper is the bomb!

Allex Ohler – Staff Writer

Being Allex Ohler / Blinky is interesting. “I’m like the ring leader, I call the shots. Im like a fire cracker, I make it hot.” Unlike Rosanne I am no longer terrified of Greg Uribe. I’m a junior and I have a ferret named Cinderfella. Nobody knows this, but I am scared of my rage sometimes. Whoever said orange was the new pink was seriously disturbed. I don’t hold grudges and I’d rather hang with the boys any day. Being in newspaper is cool, but it has its moments. The NP girls are the “best I ever had” In my free time I like to “drop it like it’s hot.”

Jamila Obied – Staff Writer

In the words of Celine Dion, “It’s all coming back to me now.” As I sit at my same computer on the fourth day of school, flashbacks from the previous year in newspaper run through my mind. The laughs, the tears, the annoyance from my superiors, my dread for creating a story (the interview, the writing, the procrastination). I’m going into my third year of journalism. With that experience, I still manage to miss every deadline and I’m occasionally the joke of the classroom, and somehow I still feel I’m at freshman status. Maybe all that will change this year now that I actually have a press pass and newspaper is double blocked. Until I finally shine through, I’ll continue to talk inappropriately, sit in the back of the classroom, put off my assignments till the last minute, ignore Greg and all other advice, and simply…do what I want.

Nadley Doerge – Staff Writer

I am a simple adolescent with many unrealistic aspirations. I realized none of those goals will be met anytime soon, so I have decided to work for The Rider. For now. Having to settle for The Rider was a disappointment at first, but after many hours of Mr. Malletts’ inspirational spiels and dancing in the free time, I had the epiphany that Legacy Journalism is in fact the place for me. On the other hand, while not in Newspaper I enjoy making delicious calzones for Tyler Terhall, antiquing with Sophie Smith, and baking wonderful cookies with Olivia Hebert while watching Heroes. But when all is said and done I am just a Joanie that found my Chachi.

Julianna Di Napoli – Staff Writer

Ju-lee-ah-na Dee-nap-o-li.  Why hello there. I’m one of those people who can be both quiet and loud.  I’d rather do nothing than do anything.  I love to spend rainy days reading while listening to The Beatles.  I’m a twitter maniac, lame right?  I have tiny fingers.  Generally they’re called sausage fingers.  I really hate that.  I love writing, though, a lot.  I also love going to concerts.  I’m a grammar freak; I will correct you - even if you’re my mom. I smile a lot!  I actually really want to put smiley faces all over this thing, because I sound super sad.:-)  And laugh at just about anything.  Most of my best friends are cheerleaders.  Nature’s awesome, random right?  I guess I’m pretty cool, Ashley Deam thinks I am.

Josh Perry – Staff Writer

At the end of 8th grade when the high school representatives came and talked to us about next years schedule, I found journalism in the course manual. I read it over and it interested me, I had to get that class. Freshman year it was my favorite class, I couldn’t wait to get there every A day. I’m not the strongest writer but I love to write news. The people are great and the class is entertaining.

Jim Cockrell – Adviser

Many students still call me “Coach”, (and I consider it an honor) even though I’m in my second year of having been retired from the coaching aspect of my educational career.  Since being at Legacy from the time it opened, I’ve taught English, World History, and Photojournalism.  This is the first year that I’ve taught the same thing twice (Photojournalism), and in addition to teaching four sections of Photojournalism, I get to teach the first ever (to my knowledge) Broadcast Journalism courses in the history of the Mansfield ISD that focus on the TV / video side of broadcast, thanks to the “Think Big” grant that was awarded last year from the MISD Foundation.

I spent several years in the TV News business, but it was a long time ago (early 70’s).  I worked at KRBC TV (Channel 9) and KTXS (Channel 12), both in Abilene, and KDFW (Channel 4) in Dallas.  I’ve interviewed governors and senators, been threatened by criminals (as well as law enforcement officers), been shot at by snipers, had film that I shot purchased and aired by CBS news, and I filmed & produced on location a documentary in the Middle East.  I’ve done sports coverage of the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers.  I’ve witnessed horrific events that haunted my dreams for years afterward.  I could still take apart, and put back together the old steel-bodied 16 mm Bell & Howell DR70, or the Auricon 16mm optical stripe sound-on-film news cameras in my sleep.

While the technology of television news has changed, the need to teach my students how to visually capture action and sound under all conditions has not.  The students in my two Broadcast Journalism classes are OUTSTANDING… not only are they creative and bright… they are already pushing me to the edge of my technological expertise, so I’m pushing myself just to stay up with them.  How fun is that?  Let’s just say I can’t believe they pay me to do this ;-)

Leland Mallett – Adviser

First, It’s just Mallett. My wife calls me “Mallett.” No Mr. needed. (And it’s pronounced like the razor Gillett.) I’m the guy behind the scenes here. I’m supposed to know what’s going on, but usually have no clue. I do have the power of the ‘Publish’ button on the website. But that’s really it. I guess this situation is ok. It is a student newspaper.

I love my job. I work with great students. Legacy’s faculty is fun, family like and very supportive of our program. My boss is great. My janitor does a great job. Besides Smith Security always giving me a parking ticket, I work with great people, and I love what I do. It’s fun to watch my kids succeed, win awards, laugh at each other, and scream from the editor’s office. I love the drama in yearbook and sarcasm in newspaper.

This is my tenth year to teach journalism. I am a print guy. I love the printed newspaper. However, the world around me has forced me to accept multimedia journalism and an online outlet. Though I was scared at first, now it’s my passion. I think the students are catching the “online love affair” as my editor calls it.

Ok- Unlike Twitter, which you need an account to follow therideronline, I don’t have a 140 character limit, but I’ll give you some added cliff notes: Mallett loves journalism, his students, his own three kids, his wife, his mom, his dad is his biggest fan and don’t use comic sans.
