When Senior Kayla Threatt approached the idea of starting the Invisible Children’s Club two years ago, she never imagined the help they could give to the children of Uganda.

“My older brother started the Invisible Childrens Club at Summit, so I showed a video of Uganda in Mr. Austin’s class and he agreed to sponsor the club,” Threatt said. “It was only after we started it that we learned that Mrs. McGuinness was from Africa, so it was only natural for her to take over the club.”

For the past two years the Invisible Children’s Club raised money through books sales and T-shirt sales, and this year their main fundraiser is “Change for Change.”

“‘Change for Change’ is a jar in all of the History classrooms to pick up people’s spare change,” Mrs. McGuinnes said. “We pick it up about every other week and is a good opportunity for students to be involved by doing one little thing–giving up their spare change.”

Sophomore Madison Mondon felt she could do more than just a little. Mondon not only joined the club freshman year, but created the design for the T-shirt sales they sold.

“After I learned about the Ugandan children I just felt like I had to do something,” Mondon said. “I’m grateful that I can contribute for a cause so big by doing so little, like giving my change and selling shirts.”

The club was pleased with it’s contribution to the international program, and frequently checked the Invisible Children’s website to see what progress had been made with their help.

“A few years ago the club’s main focus was getting the children essentials: food, water and clothes,” Threatt said. “Now we can build schools and hospitals for them as well as the basic needs. It’s great to see how far the organization has come as a whole, and it did it through us.”
