Behind the Scenes: Allstar Weekend
The members of Allstar Weekend: Zach Porter, Nathan Darmody, Cameron Quiseng and Michael Martinez stood outside a Jonas Brother concert handing out flyers to anyone that would take one. They never expected that one of the flyers would end up in the hands of a Disney Channel executive.
“Since we got signed a year ago we’ve had the best year of our lives,” Porter said. “Traveling the country is a dream come true.”
Allstar Weekend finds inspiration for their lyrics from past relationships, other music and fans.
“You can’t just give them a good song anymore, that’s half the battle the other half of the battle is being the kind of person someone can relate to,” Porter said.
Fans are extremely important to Allstar Weekend. At every concert they have a meet and greet before and after every show. They believe fans control the music scene.
“A lot of that has to do with the relationship you have with the fans,” Darmody said. “It definitely helps because more people come to our shows.”
Compared to the other Disney Chanel bands, they are one of the few groups without a televisions show. However, they feel Disney has heightened their popularity and increased their fan base.
“[The music] is about the personality,” Porter said. “People want to hear a band or artist that they can relate to on a personal level.”
According Quiseng, three years ago the band wrote their first singles which didn’t become hits until recently when they were played during commercials on Disney Channel.
“We pretty much wrote two albums worth of songs once we got signed,” Darmody said. “That summer the hard work really kicked in and we had to switch gears.”
Allstar Weekend advises aspiring artists to put themselves out there by putting their own videos online and work hard to make one’s dream come true.
“We pretty much made a name for ourselves,” Darmody said. “50 percent of it is the craftsmanship and the other half is how much drive and persistence you have.”
