New coke machines have been installed in the vending area outside of the cafeteria. Students may purchase non diet drinks from these machines before and after school.

In the next few weeks there will be six machines serving both sugar and diet bottled drinks.

“I think its pretty dumb because it’s tempting to get one, but if you have to wait until after school you can just wait until you get home,” freshman  Patrick Neaves said.

According to Mr. Contreras, drinks are not available during school because of the federal law stating, schools cannot sell sugared drinks and snacks. The money earned from the machine goes to a student activity fund.

Installing the drink machines was Mr. Wright’s idea. He explored and looked at alternatives to see what he could do to make money for the students and stay within the guidelines.

The “no sugared drinks or snacks” law is sort of unfair towards schools that don’t have off campus lunches. Students who have off campus can go off and get whatever they want to drink that day. Others are stuck choosing between milk and diet poison (as opposed to regular poison.)

Truthfully, I couldn’t care less about sodas. Not at school, at least. I’ve been weened off of them the last two years. I don’t need it. I’m not even tempted. After drinking diet cherry 7 up (aka medicine flavor) I don’t know if I can even trust the machines anymore. If they could bring back good old VITAMIN WATER for a dollar like freshman year, that’d be awesome. I might start buying again. But – i think i’d rather save my money for Wendy’s Wednesday or something. Yeah.

If there is a policy about no sugary drinks then why in the world is there 26 GRAMS OF SUGAR in my lunch milk?! 26 grams is a ridiculous amount of sugar to put in 8 ounces of milk! I will admit that the food quality has definitely improved this year, but they have yet to offer more of a healthy quality in our food.
