Amy Deatherage steps behind her podium, pulling out her phone she updates her Facebook and Twitter pages.

Deatherage, who teaches AP World History, AP Macroeconomics and regularly paced Ecomics, used the two social networking sites to help students understand the class curriculum.

“I loved history because I was able to figure out what was important,” Deatherage said. “I want them to do the same, get in and get dirty with history, not have someone up there telling them everything they think they ought to know.”

Deatherage’s teaching methods and strategies rely on building a relationship with her students. In class she creates group daily work assignments to help them further their understanding, while outside of class she supports their extracurricular activities.

“I think they know that I am there for them whenever they need me,” Deatherage said.

Deatherage tries not to bore her classes, infusing her curriculum with humor as well as movie and music clips.

“In class, I have a casual style,” Deatherage said. “Humor is a must.”

Deatherage has an interesting way of getting students involved with the subject.

“I always try to tell students the purpose behind what I assign,” Deatherage said. “The reason why they need to know history is to get the jokes.”
