Chemistry teacher John Sudbury can use four words to describe how he teaches.

“I try to have fun. I’m a little laid back. My expectations are very clear from Day one,” Sudbury said.

Recently, a class had what Sudbury referred to as a “fun” moment.

“We were creating hydrogen gas in a chemical reaction and we did a flame to see if the gas was combustible.  The reaction created a surprising sound and scared a few students,” Sudbury said.

Sudbury has two separate teacher positions which allow him interact with his students inside and outside the school.

“I’m around students all day, everyday between teaching chemistry and driver’s education so I know what’s going on with them. I hear about their activities and about what’s going on in their life. I listen and converse with them. It wasn’t long ago that I was sitting where they are taking classes,” Sudbury said.

Sudbury tries his best to make his students comfortable with his teaching habits.

“I like to provide structure for students with a variety of different activities,” Sudbury said. “They know what to expect everyday in class even though the delivery of the content may vary, and they know my expectations for their work ethic and classroom performance.”
