Musselman, Haemker Excel in Diving
.
Starting at the end of the board, freshman Sarah Musselman prepares her approach with full concentration. She comes to the other end of the board and goes airborne, starting the maneuvers. She dips into the water, with little splash, and the crowd applauses.
Musselman and sophomore Ian Haemker are both divers for the Bronco Diving team. Musselman has been diving since she was eight years old. Before Musselman came to Legacy, she tested her skills in National’s in seventh grade, receiving third place. Musselman, meanwhile, was shocked by the announcement.
“I did Nationals just for fun,” Musselman said. “I worked really hard, and it was really exciting getting that far at nationals.”
Musselman has her goals set high. She knows her grades and her performances at all her meets will determine if she will go to college on a scholarship.
“If I keep my grades up and I keep succeeding in diving I will get a full-ride scholarship in diving,” Musselman said. “I have to do a lot of studying in the car, and I have to stay up all night studying.”
On the next board over Ian Haemker dives into the cool water.
This is Haemker’s second year on the team, where he already made a name for himself qualifying for state as a freshman.
“I am the only guy Legacy diver,” Haemker said. “It’s alright, but it would be nice to have someone to talk to.”
Haemker had the choice to go to swimming as a freshman but decided to dive.
“I just thought that diving was cooler.”
During a normal routine Haemker decided to perform a dangerous dive. He jumped and hit his head on the board during a flip. His head completely busted open.
“I thought I was going to have to quit diving,” Haemker said.
Haemker was affected little by the accident, but had one event he could not participate in; the inward two and a half.
“I didn’t like it, but I’m trying to get the dive [back],” Haemker said.
