The boys’ basketball team faced an Everman Bulldogs team that was on a roll. The Bulldogs, who lost to the Broncos on January 8 47-46, came into Tuesday night’s game on a six game winning streak.

“We focused on trying to limit their three point shooting and offensive rebounds,” Head Coach Marchie Murdock said.

The game had game changing plays, the first of which was a three point opportunity where guard Derry Franklin missed a free throw, after making a lay up. Another was a half court three pointer at the buzzer by guard Jordan Taulton. Also, defense was a key for both teams. Legacy led 19-5 at the end of one quarter. However, Everman’s defense held the Broncos to six second quarter points, but the Broncos still led at the half 25-20.

The Bulldogs out scored the Broncos 19-12 in the third quarter and led 39-37 at the end of the third quarter. After seeing their lead turn into a deficit, the team seemed dejected.

“I told them it’s a long game and teams make runs, stick to the game plan and we will be fine,” Murdock said.

In the fourth quarter, the Broncos held Everman to nine points, while scoring 18.

“They [Everman] shot 3-for-22 from three, so we did a good job,” Murdock said.

The team’s defense and efficiency on the offensive end in the quarter propelled Legacy to a 55-48 district win.

The Broncos’ leading scorer, senior Eddie Leal didn’t play in the team’s win.

“Losing Eddie was hard initially. Derry Franklin and David Miller have stepped up their games on both ends. Brandon Potter, Kevin Barona, Josh Doctson and Chad McNeil have provided the little things,” Murdock said.

Junior Derry Franklin led the team with 16 points, while teammate Josh Doctson poured in 14 points.

With a few more wins, the team will qualify for the UIL state tournament.

“I think we are starting a steady climb to a higher level of play and I hope we keep getting better,” Murdock said.
