Legacy swim team sent nine students to state after the regional meet, with four swimmers golds and two silvers. The state meet takes place at the University of Texas in Austin on Feb. 21 and 22. Sophomore Hannah Pikey qualified in the girls 400 freestyle relay, alongside junior Kendall Martinson, freshman Haley Yelle and senior Madison Yelle.

“[When I found out I qualified] I got really happy but also kind of sad because it’s on my birthday,” Pikey said.

Freshman Austin Spencer qualified in one meter diving, the only diver to make it to the state meet this year. Moving from Stafford, Virginia, Spencer completed his first year of diving ever to make it to state with Legacy.

“My first year was new and interesting as it was my first time doing athletics at any school,” Spencer said. “It was fun for me and I was accepted by the team.”

Haley qualified in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle, with her sister Madison qualifying in the 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle. Brothers Nicholas and Will Tullbane also qualified to state in their speciality strokes. Nicholas qualified in the 100 backstroke and Will in the 100 butterfly.

Swim Coach Tullbane was tossed in the pool for a third straight year in celebration of a district win – this time for both the boys’ and girls’ team. The team will move onto regionals Feb. 7-8 at the Mansfield Natatorium.

“When they said our names, I think everybody was ecstatic that we won district. All of our hard work we put in during the season and the off season had finally paid off,” junior Brandon Bernal said.

The boys swim team brought home the District 8-4A trophy, winning events and beating school records.

“When I heard I broke the school record I was overwhelmed with joy,” sophomore Nicholas Tullbane said.

The girls, for the second time in a row, were District 8-4A champions. Freshman Haley Yelle beat the both won and beat the school record in the 200m freestyle and the 500 freestyle events.

“I felt accomplished to beat a school record as a freshman,” Yelle said.

Individual winners in the boys were junior Will Tullbane, winning the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly and also setting a school record, sophomore Nicholas Tullbane, winning the 100 backstroke and also setting a school record, and freshman Austin Spencer in the 1 meter diving.

“I hope next year that we can continue to be district champions and get more people off to state,” junior Brandon Bernal said.

The girl’s individual winners were senior Madison Yelle in the 100 Freestyle and Breaststroke, senior Maria Castillo in 1 meter diving and junior Kendall Martinson in the 100 Butterfly.

Hi, my name is Moses and I am flabbergasted to be joining the newspaper team this year. I am on the drum line and I am one of those people that believe band is life. I have a huge infatuation with the NFL and I can name you almost every offensive player on every team. Obsessed, don’t you think? I have 1 dog, 2 brothers and two sisters, and I live with my mom. I love long walks on the beach and Cici's pizza. [email protected]
