Taking a few deep breaths, junior Kameron Alston prepares to sing at the final concert for Texas All State. He is one of thousands of musicians that have made it through all four rounds of the competition and into the choir.

Alston discovered his love for singing at around age five. He decided to join choir in sixth grade at Cross Timbers after a brief stint in band, where he played percussion.

“I was horrible in band, so they asked me to leave,” Alston said. “I needed something to do, and I’ve always liked singing. I thought ‘why not?’”

Alston stayed in choir in seventh grade at T.A. Howard middle school, and continued with it into high school. He currently performs with the varsity mixed choir at Legacy.

“I owe a lot to my parents,” Alston said. “They support me a lot and always put up with my loud singing around the house.”

Alston was selected as one of over 1,500 students chosen to perform in one of thirteen ensembles at Texas All State, one of the highest honors a musician in the state can receive.

“It really is an honor being around so many great musicians,” Alston said.

Alstons plans to go to college to major in vocal performance. He eventually wants to become a professional opera singer. He also wishes to pursue musical theater sometime in the near future.

“Singing has always been something I’ve advanced at,” Alston said. “I’m good at other things, but I’ve always been best at singing.”
