At the crowded table, senior Beau Billings checks in for his races and receives his number. His nerves intensify as he prepares for his race. Billings tries to tone everything out after the official called his heat to the line. Now in position, he silently prayed and waited for the start. The gun sounded and Billings took off. All thoughts escaped his mind and his body took over as he raced to the finish line.

“Whenever I step on the track, I think I have a chance to improve my body and my mind,” Billings said. “It helps me push my physical and mental limits.”

The team trains daily for their meets. Sophomore Maquela Noel runs relays, the 200 meter and 100 meter dash. She credits Track Coach Lacy Beckler for the success of the team.

“She makes the season fun and exciting, but her personality and mentality impacted how good our season has been for each runner and as a team,” Noel said.

The team holds one another accountable for pulling their weight in the track meets. Freshman Gabi Lowry runs the 1,600 meter and 3,200 meter races for her first year on the track team.

“When I’m running I have such mixed emotions because I feel like passing out, but then the team helps keep you accountable,” Lowry said. “As a team, we are all really close, and they make running laps enjoyable.”

To challenge the track team, Legacy invites 6A track teams to race in their meets. The coach hopes to push the team and make them more competitive. Individuals on the team broke personal records, but no school records have been broken.

“Throughout the years I have improved greatly” Billings said. “The feeling of setting your own records is one of the best I have experienced.”
