Boys varsity soccer kicked off their season earlier this month. The Broncos went undefeated in the Crowley Kowbell tournament with a 2-1 win over Trimble Tech on Jan. 7. Junior Captain Tristian Adams scored one of those points.

“As an individual, I went into our games trying to stay focused and to not let the cold get to me.” Adams said. “As a team, I think we all had one main mindset of doing whatever we had to do to win. We all went into the games motivated to prove everybody that we’re going to do great things this year.”

The Broncos are 3-3 this season, a better start compared to last season’s two-game losing streak in the beginning of the season. The Broncos were 2-4 at this point last season with the following game ending in a tie. With many left in regular season, it may be a little too early to tell, but the larger amounts of athletes that tried out might be working in the Broncos’ favor. Numerous season starters have soccer history with each other in out-of-school leagues. Adams said this has proved to be a benefit.

“A key to being a successful team is having chemistry,” Adams said. “Most of us have played together for a good amount of time, so we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. We know how to play together.”

The Broncos faced Burleson on  Jan. 12. The game was held at Everman Stadium for the Everman tournament. The Broncos finished the tournament 1-2, but this doesn’t deter the hope for a successful season. The Broncos did not compete against any of their district opponents.

“I don’t know what I would do without soccer,” Adams said. “I really hope and think we [will] go far in playoffs this year or farther.”

Coach Michael Keel faces his first season as the head coach. The Broncos will face very similar district opponents with only one new district opponent — Mansfield Timberview.

“I have learned so many things that I did not know prior to entering this position,” Coach Keel said. “I am excited about the upcoming season and feel confident that we will contend for a playoff spot, if not the district championship.”

The Broncos will start district play on Jan. 24 against Midlothian. Adams said the team will accept the challenge and prove to focus on the big picture of making playoffs.

“Last year when we didn’t make playoffs, it really hit everyone,” Adams said. “I know it’s going to be a challenge, but I really want to make it to playoffs. I’m going to do everything I can to make sure we get there.”
