Now sitting at 7th in district, with a 3-6 record, the boys’ basketball team attempts to stay positive with what they have done this year. Looking to bounce back, team members like sophomore and point guard Jalen Catalon realized they may have a playoff spot in February.

“We still have five games left this season,” Catalon said. “This season isn’t over by any means, and we’ve been doing good lately on turning our season around.”

Winning the last two games in round one of the district game against Summit and Red Oak gave the Broncos momentum for the second round despite their two first losses in round two. Senior Phillip Smith serves as a forward for the team and believes the loss against Midlothian was tough.

“It was the most painful because it was the hardest we’ve worked in a game all season,” Smith said. “We were knocking down shots [and] playing good defense, but we ended up losing 73-68.”

With the loss, the team seems to be more eager to have a solid run and to get into a playoff spot.

“The Midlothian loss has helped with our team’s focus, and it has shown us what it takes to win big games,” Smith said.

Getting down to the point of the season where there is almost no margin for error, the team remembers their original goals to start the season.

“The season has had many ups and downs, but we definitely have a lot more to prove who we are and what we are capable of,” Catalon said. “Playoffs means everything to us and it’s been our goal the whole year.”
