Community Service Class Helps at Mission Center

Bethany Miller and Krystin Jurries rummage through cardboard boxes and plastic bags, separating Beanie Babies, DVDs, shoes and unidentifiable children’s toys to be priced and put out for sale.

The seniors spend every other afternoon at the Wesley Mission Center, volunteering for the First United Methodist Church. Their Community Service class, led by history teacher Rena Long, exposed them to the joy of helping others.

“It’s really humbling, being able to just serve. It’s enjoyable, too. We get to have fun while we serve people,” Jurries said

Miller and Jurries organize the toys, clothes and books that come through the store and arrange them on shelves and in buckets before the mission center opens.

“They give out to the community. They do whatever they can to help whoever needs help,” Miller said.

Students in the Community Service class volunteer at other places, including nursing homes and non-profit organizations.

“At first we didn’t really know what we were going to do,” Jurries said. “The more we heard about it [the center], the more we were intrigued. It’s an awesome place.”

Miller and Jurries will continue to volunteer at the Wesley Mission Center even after they have finished the class. Anyone can shop at the store, and proceeds go to a church counseling center.

“Not only can you get really cool stuff there, but you’re helping people in your community by shopping there,” Jurries said. “It’s really fulfilling.”
