Six MISD students, along with art teacher Mr. Mason, departed to the Dallas Convention Center to create a mural with the help of a famous Parisian artist, Sebastien D. Boileau. It took the course of about two days to complete.
“Mr. Boileau told us to do anything we wanted on the painting. There was an American flag drawn before we got there. He wanted us to make it different and not be a typical American flag. It was really cool working with him,” senior Rory Garber said.
Mr. Boileau only wanted a select few of highly talented AP art students to take part in this art project. He needed students who could bring their imagination and creativity to the mural. The students selected were eager to participate in this painting. On the first day, they worked a total of eight of hours.
“Mr. Mason saw that I had really good design skills and all my art work the previous years, so he selected me as one of the students from his AP art class to go and partake in this project. I’d never done a collaboration with art before, and I had always wanted to,” Garber said.
The students did not know where to begin whenever they got there. Mr. Boileau guided them and gave them tips on creating the graphite mural, and answered any questions.
“I was very afraid to even touch it. I really did not want to mess it up,” Garber said. “I didn’t know how to do graphite art. I’ve never done something like this before on a big scale.”
The students thought the experience overall was wonderful. They were allowed to skip school for a day and go do something that they enjoy doing. Also, they were able to spend some time with a famous painter and see how he does things.
“I learned to go out of the box and do my own thing. It was interesting to work with a group that shared a common interest as me and put my artistic abilities with others,” Garber said. “No one expected it to turn out the way it did. It was amazing,”
