LUCK Week: Stop the Music

The Gummy Bear song will be played during passing periods until enough money is raised to turn it off.

Starting Tuesday, students can expect to be familiar with the song “The Gummy Bear Song.” The Gummy Bear Song, first released in 2007, now has over 525,281,125 views on YouTube, and many people categorize it as the most annoying song on earth.

According to The Telegraph, the song was first released in Hungary where it spent eight months as the number one tune. It features Gummibär, a green bear who dances and sings the song.

In order to help raise money for Brooke Hester, Legacy’s LUCK Week candidate, the school will be doing a fundraising technique called “Stop the Music.” Legacy will be playing The Gummy Bear Song over the PA system during all passing periods starting Tuesday, March 3rd. To stop the music, teachers were given envelopes to collect money from their classes. Once $1,500 is raised throughout the school, the music will stop.

”When I first heard that the song was going to be The Gummy Bear Song, I thought we better raise $1,500 before I throw a fit,” senior Ari Hernandez said. “It makes me want to pull my hair out.”

Ms. Ausdenmoore, the Student Council teacher, and Dr. Butler, the principal, were made aware that teachers weren’t happy with the Stop the Music fundraiser last year.

“I’m anticipating threats,” Ms. Ausdenmoore said laughing. “The point of this is for it to be annoying so people will donate.”

However, this year some teachers are making the best of it. Mr. Ritz, the Debate teacher has agreed to shave his head if his classes raise more money than any other teacher.

“I warned teachers in advance this year and explained why this is such a good fundraiser,” Ms. Ausdenmoore said. “And now it looks like they’re having fun with it.”

More information about Hester’s journey can be found at her website, BrookeFightsBack.org, or her online journal on CaringBridge.org. Students, staff and the community are being asked to share Hester’s story on social media.
