Senior Lisa Hart takes a deep breath and closes her eyes as she begins to focus on the upcoming game. Being a part of the varsity girls’ softball team, Hart goes through what she needs to do in order to succeed in keeping up her team’s successful streak.

“Being on top feels pretty good. It’s harder to stay on top than to make it here,” Hart said. “This is what we’ve worked for.”

Legacy High School’s varsity girls’ softball team made school history this season by remaining undefeated in district play with a record of 16-0. This is only the second season at Legacy for head coach, Amie Prater. She said the team has shown great success throughout the season.

“I measure success in a lot of different ways: Did we succeed? Are we learning the game? Are we treating each other like family?” Coach Prater said. “This is how I measure success, and so far, I see success in the making.”

Although Prater said she has had successful and undefeated seasons at other schools, she considers this year at Legacy one of her most rewarding seasons. It all came down to the girls’ confidence in themselves and each other’s abilities. The companionship and ability to work together and have fun contributes to a team’s success, and the team has one tradition that builds up their determination.

“The girls have come up with a new mantra, ‘We hungry,’” Prater said. “It’s a lot of fun, and it brings a lot of sass out of the girls. It’s been one of biggest difference makers this season.”

The team developed the expression as a way to express that they aren’t satisfied and are hungry for a win. The girls will bring bowls, spoons and other kitchen utensils to the games in order to emphasize their point. When on the bases some of the girls can been seen motioning like they are eating dinner.

“I feel accomplished being a senior,” Hart said. “This is what we’ve worked for.”
