Mansfield ISD will host its first spring advanced academics symposium at The Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 5-8 p.m. The symposium serves a way for the advanced academics department to communicate directly with the community about the department’s programs and offerings.

“I am very excited to show just a few of the amazing things that we do in Mansfield,” Ms. Teresa Francis, MISD Advanced Academics Coordinator, said.

Parents of K-12 gifted and talented students are highly recommended to attend to learn more about the MISD GT program. In addition, any parent who is interested in signing their child up for Pre-AP or AP courses should come to learn exactly what the courses entail and how it will meet their child’s needs.

“Parents should understand the purpose of each AP course and what potential benefits each one may have for college,” Ms. Francis said. “These sessions are built around the types of questions and concerns that our teachers get throughout the year.”

During the symposium, there will be several events occurring. Elementary students will feature their showcase projects. In addition, each AP course will have a booth to answer questions, and there will be breakout sessions covering a wide variety of topics. An AP Human Geography parent session will also be held from 7-8 p.m. Parents will be able to receive information about MISD summer opportunities and extracurricular opportunities.

“This gives the Advanced Academics department an opportunity to answer questions and encourage people to see the variety of opportunities for students,” Ms. Francis said. “ It is also a way to better understand how our program runs and what it offers.”

MISD currently offers a variety of advanced academic opportunities for its elementary, middle and high schools. For elementary schools, MISD has gifted and talented clusters. Intermediate and middle schools have a variety of Pre-AP courses, and high school offers an assortment of Pre-AP and AP courses in addition to dual enrollment opportunities.

“Students need to be challenged to grow and think,” Ms. Francis said. “The opportunities we offer do just that.”
