Though the school year has just begun, the Legacy Theater Department will host its first set of auditions in the PAC Thursday, August 23rd, from 3 p.m to 5 p.m. Jeremy Ferman, the head of the department, has chosen “Peter and the Starcatcher” as the annual Fall Show. Written by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson and adapted for the stage by Rick Elice, the play follows the young Peter Pan before he becomes Peter. Theater teacher Sarah Fortune will co-direct the show alongside Ferman.

“I’ve always wanted to do it. I’ve loved it since I saw snippets of it during the Tony Awards,” Ferman said. “I’ve seen it a couple times and I would think ‘Oh, what if they had done this?’ or ‘What if this looked like this?’ And I’ve always been kind of wanting to put it onstage. It’s a good opportunity to do it and it has the opportunity to cast a lot of people,”

Auditions will consist only of cold readings. This means, reading aloud from a script with little to no rehearsal ahead of time. Ferman and Fortune will pair students together for duet or group scenes and have them read a side of the script onstage. Senior and Drama Club president, Katy Thomas plans to audition for this show and has auditioned for numerous shows in the past.

“I was more nervous in the beginning of auditions, just because you don’t know what’s going to happen,” Thomas said. “But after you do one or two Legacy Theater auditions you kinda get a feel for how things are going to work.”

Ferman always looks to bring in new faces for each production.

“I’m looking for people that are willing to explore and do and be creative and have fun,” a passionate Ferman said. “Just go for it. Don’t hold back.”

Once the cast list goes up, rehearsals will begin the week after, running from 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m Monday through Thursday afternoons. For students undecided about whether to audition or not because of participation in other activities, Ferman will work around other schedules to an extent.

“If it’s every single day sometimes it’s hard to work around that,” Ferman said. “At the beginning, on the rehearsal schedule I say ‘Tell me your conflicts,’ and if I can work with the conflicts, I work with the conflicts. And if I can’t, I can’t. But I do my best to work around it.”
