Laughing and shouting girls rush to get to their seats as the bell rang for Varsity Women’s Choir to start.

“I know the bell has rung, but did it actually ring,” Choir Director Josh Powell said. “Alright friends a couple of things.”

As he started, two girls whispered across the room. They laughed and slowly became quiet waiting for Powell to finish announcements.

“This is the grading period that counts toward UIL,” Mr. Powell said. “I need every single person to pass.”

His last announcement covered solo and ensemble, a competition for soloist rather than the whole choir.

“I would like you to stand up if you want to participate,” Powell said.

As he wrote down the girls’ names down, other girls started volunteering their friends.

“I think Jackie should do it,” junior Alyssa Reisinger said.

The girls whose names were getting yelled out looked around anxiously hoping Mr. Powell wouldn’t write their names.

“Now everyone start warming up. Everyone starts do do do so,” Powell said. “Really look at the 16th notes.”

The choir finished sight reading and moved on to their actual pieces of music. The once very goofy environment turned to serious.

“Altos, what is your note right there,” Powell said.

“Le Te,” the alto section responded.

The choir continued to work on their potential UIL pieces for the rest of the class.
